COMMERCIAL PROPERTY VIEWPOINT November 2015

For Wiltshire Business

Amongst the significant news this month was the announcement of improvements to Swindon’s much maligned shopping centre, The Brunel Shopping Centre, which has been in receiver’s hands since 2012. The Brunel was even included in a Radio 4 programme on zombie shopping centres, where I had the pleasure of being interviewed by Hugh Pym from the BBC!  News of plans to create a 16,000 sq ft food court at first floor level are very welcome and will bring new life to a largely empty part of the shopping centre. The proposals are for 7 new restaurants and 2 food kiosks, with a large customer seating area with charge points for mobiles and free super-fast wi-fi.  In addition, a new play zone, an event space and a click & collect point will be created, with new escalator access direct from Canal Walk. Whilst the food court plans do not yet have planning permission, The Brunel’s managers, FIREM, are hoping to have the food court ready and trading by Spring/Summer next year. Hopefully, when open, the new footfall generated at first floor level will encourage take-up of the remaining vacant shops nearby and boost the currently ailing Brunel Arcade area. In my view, any new investment and new initiative to improve the town’s main shopping centre must be welcomed and I would urge readers to contact the Council’s planning department to support this planning application.
